Monitoring Your Children Blogs

Saturday, October 15th, 2011

Internet users now have a variety of options available to them for publishing and maintaining a blog. Additionally, the growing popularity of blogs currently available promotes an interest in blogging with other Internet users. Children are bombarded on a daily basis with a variety of blogs available online and are understandably interested in creating blogs of their own. In most cases children create blogs for social reasons but there are some savvy children who realize the potential for profit from blogging. While there are a great deal of benefits children can gain from blogging there are also some risks involved. Therefore parents should carefully monitor their child’s blog as well as all of his Internet usage. This article will discuss the subject of monitoring a child’s blog in greater detail.

Discuss Blog Expectations with Children

The first step parents should take when a child is interested in creating a blog is to thoroughly discuss the expectations with the child. The child and parent should have an open and honest discussion about responsible use of the Internet. This is important because these conversations can lay the groundwork for how the child will behave online. There are certain dangers which exist on the Internet but parents who understand these dangers and communicate with their children to share this potential for danger as well as information on staying safe while online are likely to have children who stay safe while online.

When a child is considering starting a blog, the parent should be involved in the process from the very start. The parent should not only be aware of the child’s intention to begin blogging but should also be aware of the child’s reason for wanting to blog and intentions for the blog. This is important because it can help the parents to set appropriate guidelines for the blog. For example a child may be interested in social networking through a blog but should understand there is the potential for danger with this type of blog. Parents should place limitations on the content of the blog and should advise the children to avoid disclosing personal information such as his full name, address and phone number on the blog. Other information which can be used to identify and locate the child should also be avoided.

Regularly Reviewing Your Child’s Blog

In addition to discussing blogging with the child and establishing ground rules for the content of the blog, the parents should also regularly visit the blog to ensure the established rules are being followed. Parents should review the blogs of their children on a regular basis but should not inform the children when these reviews will take place. This will help to prevent the children from altering the blog to eliminate questionable material during the review and replacing this material after the review is complete. This is important because it would be rather simple for the child to make changes quickly simply by saving files and replacing them with appropriate blog postings during scheduled reviews.

Monitoring the Blogs Your Child Frequents

Parents should also consider regularly monitoring the blogs their children frequent. This is important because the information children are viewing online can be harmful to children. It is also important because most blogs provide the opportunity for visitors to communicate with the blogger. In most cases this communication is in the form of comments which are left for the blogger and the blogger may choose to respond to these comments. In some cases the visitor may even have the opportunity to provide personal contact information to the blogger. Parents who remain aware of the blogs their children visit can review these blogs carefully to ensure their children are not behaving inappropriately online and are not inadvertently putting themselves at risk with the actions they take.

Blogs Get Indexed Fast – Blogging For Beginners

Monday, September 12th, 2011

My favorite and most powerful marketing strategy is article marketing. Article marketing creates more free leads for my network marketing business than any other marketing strategy I use, but it has’nt always been like that.To be successful with article marketing you need to use ittogether with a blog. When I first started marketing I thought blogging was a waste of time, today I stand corrected

Here’s why you need a blog. This is the first powerful lesson I learned about the power of a blog.

When I first started marketing online I spent days developing a website then begancreating worthwhile content. I seriously went into a flurry of activity making any type of content i could think of, articles, videos, photos thinking the more I posted the faster my site would get indexed in the search engines..The problem was days went by.

but every time I looked my content was’nt showing up in the search engines. How am I supposed to get traffic if I cannot get listed in google.

My articles and my content were taking forever to show up in the search engines Even when I finally got indexed it was still taking up to a month before my content began to rank and even then I was only getting as high as google page 4 or 5 and this just wasn’t good enough. Regardless of what I did I just could’nt get ranked fast. Talk about frustrating

I was so frustrated that I was almost n the cusp of giving up when I ran into an online marketing aquaintance of mine I told him my predicament and he said “Chris you know you should put your content on a blog,” I looked at him and said “a blog, why’s that, I’ve got this great website” He replied “well “my blog gets indexed and ranked in 15 minutes” In hearing that I nearly fainted. I could not comprehend what I was hearing.

In short he basically said, if you don’t believe me come round to my place and I will show you. So anyway that night I went over to his house and sat in front of his computer and he demonstrated. Here’s what happened, he showed me that his was using a wordpress blog as these have an automatic search engine ping built in. He posted an article to his blog, we genuinely waited less than five minutes then did a search. Bang there was the listing of his new blog article. Not only was it already showing on google, it was ranking on page 2.

Enthralled by what I saw I raced home and immediately registered a domain name and set up a self-hosted word press blog. I posted my first article and it was listed on google within 7 minutes. I have been using my blog as the source of getting traffic ever since and the speed at which I get listed and ranked just keeps on getting better.

The lesson of the story is google loves blogs, so If you want to get seen online start blogging now.

WordPress Blogs Attack And Hack

Friday, August 26th, 2011

WordPress bloggers beware because you can be attacked and hacked due to vulnerabilities in the WordPress platform. This article covers what’s happening and then gives you 12 ways to avoid it from happening to you.

That’s right my friends WordPress blogs are being attacked, hacked and redirected to other websites without the owners of the blogs being aware. Sounds scary doesn’t it? Imagine if you had a blog or website earning you hundreds of dollars daily!

Let me back up for a moment for those that aren’t in the know:

It all started for me on June 11, 2009 when I received a desperate call from one of my friends that runs a very successful, well-known and profitable wordpress blog.

They were almost in tears because the wordpress attack and hacker used a loophole in their self hosted blogging platform to accomplish two tasks:

1) Re-direct the traffic away from his wordpress blog to another website that was full of links to different affiliate products

2) Replaced all of his static websites using Iframe redirection to ED drugs and other pharmacy type websites.

How did the blog owner find out? One of their readers clicked on a link in the blog to read a post they were interested in and they were taken to an affiliate website that had nothing to do with the topics being discussed on the blog.

Thinking it was just an error they tried again and was taken to a completely different website than they were directed to the first time. That sent up red flags for the reader and they contacted the owners of the blog.

The really sad part is that by the time the owners of the blog were able to correct the wordpress attack and hack they had lost approximately 0 in sale that day alone. What’s worse is that here we are exactly a week later and they are still working on repairing the damage done to their static websites.

What can you do to protect you name, brand, reputation, revenue and WordPress blog from being attacked and hacked?

1. Secure Your WordPress Database -

Create a database for WordPress. WP uses only a few tables but creating a whole database just for the blog is more likely to limit its access.
Create and grant limited access to a database user. Create a user to access this database only and grant limited access to SQL commands in the database (select, insert, delete, update, create, drop and alter).
Pick a strong database password. Make it as random as possible since you don’t have to remember it.

2. Populate wp-config.php Properly – Use WordPress secret key generation tool to generate random WordPress cookies. These keys are used to insure better encryption of information stored in WordPress user’s cookies.
You also want to modify the WordPress table prefix to something other than wp_ by adding random characters and numbers to the end of wp, such as wp64mlm_manual.

3. Replace the Default “admin” Username – Fantastico users are able to pick admin user and password as part of the installation process. Replace the default so that “admin” user name is now myadm instead of admin.

4. Pick Secure WordPress Password for “Admin” – Your password should combine uppercase and lowercase characters and include numbers.

5. Use Secure Login via Encrypted Channel – WordPress bloggers who have SSL enabled for their domain should use that encrypted channel to access their WordPress Dashboard. You can force admin sessions over HTTPS by setting the FORCE_SSL_ADMIN variable in wp-config.php file to TRUE.

6. Upgrade as New Version Becomes Available – WordPress bloggers should upgrade once newer versions are issued because the upgrades address know security vulnerability issues.

7. Update Word Press Plug-in’s – It only makes sense to do so once you upgrade to a newer version of WP.

8. Backup Your Database and Files – Install a plug-in or use cronjob to create backups of your wordpress blog database and files on a regular basis.

9. Disable Directory Browsing – By default in most hosting, indexes of directories are shown in web browsers revealing any content of a directory that has no index.html or index.php. You can modify this behavior with Apache by adding a line of code into the .htaccess file in the root directory.

10. Protect WordPress Administration Files – WordPress administration files reside in wp-admin directory of your WordPress blog. You may use .htaccess to restrict access or allow only specific IP addresses to enter this directory and file. You may also allow access from a range of IPs by way of mod_access.

11. Restrict File Access to wp-content Directory – The wp-content directory contains your theme files, uploaded images and plug-ins. WordPress blogs don’t access the .PHP files in the plug-ins and themes directories via HTTP. Restrict wp-content by way of .htaccess so only the following files can be accessed image files, javascripts, and CSS preventing people from accessing any other files directly.

12. Hide The WordPress Version in the Header Tag.

These practices are nothing new and WordPress has been telling their self hosted bloggers that they should be implementing these tactics since day one.

Now the wordpress attack and hack is in full effect and millions of bloggers are going to wake up one day and find that all their hard work, efforts and revenue is gone.

I beg all WordPress users to take emergency steps to protect themselves starting today! While I have listed what can be done in this article there is so much more that wasn’t covered so I highly recommend that you take the time to research the resource I will mention in my bio below because it is how my friend and I are now protecting ourselves from the WordPress attack and hack.

Finding Blogs TO Read

Monday, July 25th, 2011

There are also often many blogs available which cover a particular subject. Blogs can be about any subject imaginable. Some blogs are created to entertain while others are created to inform. Some blogs are created to generate a profit while other blogs are created to help others. With so many blogs currently available online it can be difficult to determine which blogs are worth reading and which are not. It can also make it difficult to limit the number of blogs the Internet user reads. This article will provide information on finding and selecting blogs to read including using search engines to find blogs, finding blogs through participation in message boards and seeking recommendations for blogs from friends or family members.

Using Search Engines to Find Blogs

Search engines are one of the most reliable resources Internet users often rely on to find useful websites. However, it is important to note search engines can also be extremely helpful for Internet users who are interested in finding blogs to read. An Internet user who is looking for a blog on a particular subject can start the process of finding these blogs by entering relevant keywords or phrases into a popular search engine and carefully reviewing the results provided for this search. However, this type of search will not necessarily provide the Internet users with blogs. In fact the search results may not include a blog on any of the first few pages in the search results despite returning pages upon pages of links to useful websites.

One simple way the Internet user can use search engines to find blogs relating to a particular subject is to include the word blog with the keywords or phrases entered into the search engine. This will help to filter the search results and may push blogs towards the front of search results. However, Internet users are better off searching for collections of blogs and then searching within these collections for ones of interest.

Finding Blogs on Message Boards

Many Internet users rely on message boards to find interesting and informative blogs. This is because many message board participants who have a blog often find ways to make others aware of this blog. This may either be through the process of incorporating a link to the blog in the message board user’s signature or, when appropriate, supplying the link to the blog directly in the message body of a post on the message board. Although many bloggers may take advantage of the opportunity to promote their own blog through message boards, those who are interested in finding new blogs will likely not have time to review all of these blogs. Therefore, it is wise for these Internet users to be somewhat discriminating about the blogs they choose to visit. One way to do this is to only visit blogs of regular forum posters who offer valuable information to the conversations on the message board. The Internet user may also wish to avoid blogs which appear to be posted as spam. This is important because these blogs are not only likely poor quality but also visiting these blogs only encourages the blog owner to continue to spam message boards with his link.

Seeking Recommendations for Blogs

Finally, Internet users who are seeking blogs to read on a regular basis can consider seeking recommendations from friends or family members who share a particular interest. Friends or family members who are interested in the same subject as you may already regularly read blogs relevant to this interest. Asking them for recommendations is worthwhile because they have no reason to do anything but recommend blogs they really enjoy and assume you will be interested in as well. Also, this method of finding blogs is ideal because your friends and family members likely know your tastes and expectations well and will likely steer you in the right direction.

Naperville native blogs about life and lessons learned
While most blogs tend to have a specific focus, recent college graduate and Naperville native Mackenzie Taylor, 22, says her blog purposefully does not have a specific angle. “If someone wants to read something and have it be enjoyable, mine is not a technical blog; there aren’t a ton of advertisements, its just very straightforward … it’s just my voice,” Taylor said. With topics ranging from …
