What part of WordPress? Content management, theming, or plugin development?

Content management is the easy part. WordPress makes posting content fairly straightforward.

Theming is a little more difficult, since you not only have to have a good grasp of HTML and CSS, you also need to know a little PHP, *and* understand how WordPress themes work. I’ve been working exclusively with WordPress for 6 months and am still learning this.

Plugin development is probably the most difficult aspect to learn. You have to have a solid knowledge of PHP, and you have to learn how to hook into WordPress’ functionality in order to run your own code. If you’re coming from a general PHP development background, like I did, it’s pretty easy to pick up with the help of the documentation. If you’re starting from square one, there’s a lot more involved, and it’s going to take you awhile. I’d been working in PHP for 5 years before working with wordpress plugins.

The best resources are the forums and the documentation pages at wordpress.org.

  3. It does not take very long at all and is not very hard. The best way to learn WordPress is to try building a site and you will learn as you are developing the site. You wont understand everything in a day or a week but if you take baby steps and take each stage at a time then you will progress very quickly. The best way to start is to download and install a free WordPress Theme and play around with it, add some sample content / blogs / news items, then add some menu items. It really is quite easy once you get started. Best of luck and dont give up, within a few weeks you will be well on your way to understanding how it all works. 4. It really depends on how quickly you pick up technology and how much you want to do with it. I think I felt comfortable with WordPress enough to customize pre-built themes after a few months.
