Q&A: How can I install WordPress without losing all the indexed html pages?

Question by Ben C: How can I install WordPress without losing all the indexed html pages?
I want to switch to a clean new WordPress theme for a site, but Google has indexed 2500 pages from the old site (mainly due to a calendar module creating a new page for each day). How do I ensure all those pages remain accessible for Google, without throwing up a “Page Not Found” when someone tries to access it after installing the new WordPress theme. The current site is content managed and is running pHp.

Installing a new theme will have no effect on your current WordPress posts and pages. As long as you don’t delete the posts or pages through WordPress, you will be fine when installing your new theme.

  2. If you already have those pages on a Worpress site and you are just changing the theme nothing will be effected, This is one of the great things about self-hosted WordPress blogs – changing the look does not change the content.

If you currently have an old fashioned HTML site, still don’t worry! WordPress will use the suffix .php on your new pages so all the old .html pages will remain and be found in Google’s index. The only page that will be affected will be index, html (which I suggest you ‘rename’ to index2.html in case you ever want to re-instate it).

  3. Your pages should remain even if you didn’t used wordpress before, so don’t worry, indexed pages will remain, just don’t delete them from your folder.
